In no particular order, these are the things I like around me when I’m coding

I’m great at:

  • JavaScript

  • SQL
  • WordPress
  • Drupal
  • Joomla!
  • Responsive Design
  • UX Design
  • Amazon S3
  • Cloudfront
  • Deployment

Hi, I’m Ben Roberts, a freelance web developer based in the lovely county of Hertfordshire, England. I run a little company called Bouncingsprout. I’ve been doing this web thing for a very long time and I am intensely passionate about it. Maybe I’m just a perfectionist. Maybe I like problem solving. What I do know, is that I love coffee. And that is the first qualification a programmer needs.

I usually work directly with web designers and graphic artists, but I’ve also helped creative consultants and marketing professionals. Sometimes, I work directly with small businesses and charities, often solving problems with their websites or taking care of their hosting and email needs.

So whoever you may be, if you need some technical help with anything on the web, I’m your guy. You can hook up with me below.

I should probably explain. That toddler in the photo is my wonderful 2-year old boy, Bertie. Bertie can be too distracting when I’m coding, so I prefer to stick to coffee, wine and jazz. This year, I’m teaching him Python.

I love working with:

  • Node.js
  • Angular
  • Foundation
  • Genesis
  • Bootstrap
  • Gulp
  • Grunt
  • SASS
  • Grav
  • Git
  • Mamp

Case Studies

I find portfolios quite dull when they are just lists. I’d rather give you a bit more detail. Here are my last two projects.

Tom McRae

Mercury Prize and BRIT Award nominee Tom, asked me to extend his basic e-commerce store so that he could offer some great new functionality. With the release of his new album imminent, I had to complete the enhancements within a 48 hour deadline.

I created the ability for Tom’s fans to pre-order his new album. To enhance the excitement further, I set-up each confirmation email to contain a link to a free digital version of one of the songs from the album. On the day of release, my system automatically processed every pre-order and let each customer know their purchase was on the way. This created an extra special buzz within his fan’s community and has led to some of the best online sales of any album so far.

Digital Downloads

Tom also asked me to allow fans to download his music directly from his site. I configured the system to allow a customer to choose between different music file formats and offered a range of methods to download purchased music. Following this improvement, Tom no longer needs to pay a 15% commission to an external online music store, every time a fan wants to buy his album.

Make Room Lofts

Make Room Lofts are a highly successful project planning company based in London. Their director, James, asked me to lead the team charged with refreshing their whole site. They had recently spent a lot of time and resources using a well known ‘do-it-yourself’ online website builder and had been very disappointed with how it performed.

Responsive Design

One of the key criteria for the site was that it should look great on any screen, of any size. As the site was being developed without the use of a pre-built template, but rather the ‘Foundation’ framework, this was easy to do, and thanks to the fantastic re-design by Martin at Blue Moon we produced a new sophisticated site that performs fantastically on all devices.

The Estimator

The other key criteria for this project was the design and deployment of an estimation tool, (again with design by Blue Moon) that would allow potential clients to receive a ballpark quote for a new loft conversion. The tool collects the data inputted from the client and then sends this to the company, who in turn reach out to the customer. This tool has proved to be a great lead generation asset and has out-performed the company’s expectations as the testimonial below makes clear. But the most exciting aspect of the estimator, is that by developing such a tool in house, rather than relying on an external service, I continue to save the company approximately £1200 per annum in fees.Image showing the Make Room Lofts website on different devices

“We took on Bouncingsprout last year to completely re-develop our website. Since working with Ben our profit over the past year has quadrupled in size. Between us we have developed an intuitive estimator tool as an integral part of our site. Our competition does not offer this service. We have been achieving sales success as a direct result of the estimator tool and this is thanks to Ben’s help and guidance.”
